President Junifen F. Gauuan of Philippine Christian University (PCU) and other heads of member-schools of the National Athletic Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities (NAASCU) took time out from their respective busy schedules last Tuesday, September 11, 2018, to take part in the league’s opening ceremonies held in Cuneta Astrodome in Pasay City. Dr. Putli Martha Beata F. Ijiran, director of PCU’s Institute of Sports, Physical Education, Arts and Culture (ISPEAC), said the NAASCU opening was “a success” and that every member-academic institution was well-represented.
Director Ijiran said PCU is participating in the following events: Basketball, volleyball, table tennis, chess, taekwondo. “We’re thinking of taking part in the event called handball in the future,” she added. She also expressed confidence about the chances of the PCU athletes in bagging the crowns in the said events, although she disclosed that the PCU Dolphins basketball team’s lineup were depleted due to the exodus of veteran players to a recently launched league. “Some of our good players already graduated or have been recruited by the MPBL,” disclosed Director Ijiran, who is also the president NAASCU this year.
SUCCESSFUL OPENING RITES. Dr. Putli Martha Beata F. Ijiran, Philippine Christian University’s director of Institute of Sports, Physical Education, Arts and Culture (ISPEAC) and this year’s president of National Athletic Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities (NAASCU), addresses the players from 16 member-schools during the opening ceremonies of the annual sports festival. Dr. Ijiran urged the athletes to play hard but fair for their respective schools.
The MPBL is the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League, a regional and semi-professional basketball tournament that was launched last year. Director Ijiran said it is understandable that the newcomers would feel the jitters, adding that this may be the reason why the Dolphins lost its first game to New Era College, 70-64. “This is expected. However, it is now the opportunity for new players to shine,” she said optimistically.
MARCH TO VICTORY. Players from the Philippine Christian University (PCU) led by PCU Dolphins’ Mac Louie F. and the school delegation’s muse, Ms Allyssa P. De Lara parade before the crowd of thousands during the successful opening ceremonies of this year’s season of the National Athletic Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities (NAASCU) held in Cuneta Astrodome in Pasay City.
The beaming President Gauuan led a large contingent composed of PCU staff and students, especially those from Grades 11 and 12, to watch the event. He also participated in giving awards and recognition to invited speakers, including Secretary Bong Go, the Special Assistant to the President of the Philippines Rodrigo Duterte, and Director General of the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa. Secretary Go talked about the importance of sports in the development of the youth and the nation, while Director-General Dela Rosa emphasized the need for the young Filipinos to stay away from the use of illegal drugs in order to reach their highest potentials. Director Ijiran encouraged all the members of the PCU community “to show their support to our athletes, especially during the elimination round when the entrance to the games is free.”
