Senior High School duo wins University Duet contest

“I look around me and see a sweet life,” the singing tandem of Maria Raquel de Leon and Micah Mendoza intoned, in the process grabbing the first place of the University Duet competition held at the Auditorium of the Philippine Christian University (PCU) Manila campus yesterday, October 2, 2018, the second day of the week-long celebration of the University’s 72nd founding anniversary.

Senior High School’s De Leon and Mendoza relied on their individual talents to give justice to the Jessie J. hit “Flashlight” to the delight of the overflowing audience, many of them students from the University’s Senior High School.

The panel of judges composed of University Guidance Counsellor Mrs. Maria Cecile Delfin, University treasurer Raul Cacho and University Music Director Glenn Cantada deemed the duo showed extra-ordinary voice quality, perfect blending and compelling stage presence to rule on their favor.

In the process, the duo got to split the P3,000 grand prize.

Meanwhile, the pair of Jennifer Bornasal and Sheila Padagdagan snatched the second place with their rendition of Celine Dion’s “Because You Loved Me.” Ms. Jonah Domingo and Ms Angeline Ramirez gained the judges’ nod with their interpretation of Josh Groban’s “You Raised Me Up.”

The two pairs received the amounts of P2,000 and P1,000, respectively, as prizes.

The special number of Mr. Jesdale Padua, who sang the popular Gary Valenciano version of “I Will Be Here,” was a hit especially among swooning girls, who screamed at the top of their lungs as they asked for more.

KEEPING IT TOGETHER. Program hosts Angel Alfonso, College of Education Dean Maritess Mercado and Dr. Marlisa Villavisa (not in photo) entertains the audience with their wit and humor as they helped the program of the University Duet contest flow smoothly.

 

Program hosts Angel Alfonso and Dr. Marlisa Villavisa’s infectious enthusiasm kept the crowd in the PCU Auditorium interested during the whole proceeding. FN
